Why the Grinch Stole Christmas
We all know just how the Grinch stole Christmas, but exactly WHY did he do it? Could it be so simple as that his shoes were too tight? Or that is head wasn't screwed on just right? Or could it be much more? After a careful review of the material, it struck me that the Grinch was an enlightened guru. He lives in solitude on the top of a mountain, communing with nature and getting in touch with his inner Grinch. This enlightened soul looks down to Whoville on the more important spiritual celebration, Christmas, and what does he see? He sees rampant materialism overshadowing any spiritual development or consideration. In all of Whoville, do you see one crucifix; one spiritual symbol at all? If they are celebrating a holiday called Christmas, literally a mass for Christ, you'd think that they might give some consideration to Christ. But no, the Grinch notices that the Whos are more concerned with frivolity and possessions than their souls.
Thus, he conceives a plan to make them violently aware of their materialism and put their mind toward what really should matter at this time of year. He will remove all the materialism from the holiday by removing the materials. Being as he is a guru and enlightened, his ways may seem cruel to us, especially when confronted with the saccharine Cindy Lu Who. He, however, was doing what was best for the Whos. He did not want Whoville to go the way of Sodom and Gomorra. He did not remove their material possessions for any personal gain, either. He intended only to return these goods to the earth from whence they came and bring awareness to the Whos.
After discovering moments from returning the goods to the earth that the Whos didn't really care about the material goods, he grows with warmth that they evolved so quickly. After returning the goods, he decides to live among the Whos and act as a respected elder to them, teaching the next generation the knowledge he has learned through his long meditation on the mountain top. The Whos, of course, take him in and love him for teaching them this lesson they needed so badly.
So was the Grinch really so mean? No meaner than any priest who tells us that materialism should not overshadow our spirituality. Yes, his methods may seem extreme to the less advanced. However, he did what he thought was right and all turned out better than he planned.
